  • JeromeDL - Adding Semantic Web Technologies to Digital Libraries RA13


    In recent years more and more information has been made available on the Web. High quality information is often stored in dedicated databases of digital libraries, which are on their way to become expanding islands of well organized information. However, managing this information still poses challenges. The Semantic Web provides technologies that are about help to meet these challenges.

    In this article we present JeromeDL, a full fledged open-source digital library system. We exemplify how digital library content management can benefit from the Semantic Web. We define and evaluate browsing and searching features. We describe how the semantic descriptions of resources and users profiles improve the usability of a digital library. We present how digital libraries can be interconnected into one heteroge- neous database with use of semantic technologies.

    The spread of mobile devices promoted the proliferation of the mobile applications from the most various scopes and the clinical area is not an exception. Mobile technologies have been adopted a long time ago by this area for both professional and teaching purposes.
    The work here presented primarily intends to provethe effective importance performed by mobile learning in the clinical learning context. More than just implement a simple learning resource, it was intended to conceive anintegrated system able to respond to all the students’ needs during the study at all its phases and places, and also at the hospital service wherethey may act as interns.
    After an exhaustive review of the most relevant mobile applications in the medical field, it was  verified the inexistence of an integrated learning tool with various learning modules and not considered expensive by the students majority. Therefore, it was envisioned an application capable of overcome this gap that will be detailed
    along this master thesis.

  • Ontological Infrastructure for a Semantic Newspaper-RA29*

    Abstract. In order to make news management in the journalism domain affordable it is necessary to make machines aware of a greater part of the underlying semantics. However, things can not change from one day to the next. Newspapers have made great investments in their current news management systems and there have been also great standardisation efforts in order to facilitate interoperation. The wish is to undertake a smooth transition. Moreover, it is also necessary to include more multimedia metadata as it is the main added value of digital newspapers. Our proposal is to build an ontological framework based on journalism (NITF, NewsML and NewsCodes) and multimedia (MPEG-7) standards. These standards are based on XML technologies. Therefore, we have developed a generic XML Schema to OWL mapping. The previous mapping is complemented with an XML metadata instances to RDF mapping that completes a transparent transfer of metadata from the XML to the Semantic Web domain. Once in a semantic space, data integration and news management and retrieval are facilitated enormously. The resulting ontological framework is now going to be applied in a journalism holding called Segre Media Group1, which produces press, radio and television content.

    Abstract. A newspaper content management system has to deal with a very heterogeneous information space as the experience in the Diari Segre newspaper has shown us. The greatest problem is to harmonise the different ways the involved users (journalist, archivists…) structure the newspaper information space, i.e. news, topics, headlines, etc. Our approach is based on ontology and differentiated universes of discourse (UoD). Users interact with the system and, from this interaction, integration rules are derived. These rules are based on Description Logic ontological relations for subsumption and equivalence. They relate the different UoD and produce a shared conceptualisation of the newspaper information domain

    O consumo de conteúdo jornalístico na Web aumenta a cada dia. No entanto, boa parte desse conteúdo ainda é produzido segundo paradigmas da mídia im- pressa. Paralelamente a isto, a Web Semântica ou Web 3.0, adiciona uma camada de "inteligência" à Web, onde computadores são capazes de extrair significados dos conteúdos acessados na Web, e consequentemente, processá-los. Neste trabalho foi definido e testado um modelo de publicação de conteúdo jornalístico apoiado pela Web Semântica. Foi desenvolvida uma ferramenta de apoio para produtores de conteúdo, com o objetivo de melhorar o processo de construção de narrativas jornalísticas para web, através da sugestão de padrões narrativos e de informações objetivas que dão suporte ao tipo de narrativa desejado. Um estudo de caso foi realizado para avaliar em ambiente real o modelo proposto. Um grupo de jornalistas usou a ferramenta desenvolvida, com aceitação unânime.

  • The Cybercultural Scene in Contemporary Journalism: Semantic Web, Algorithms, Applications and Curation - RA72*


    This paper discusses the different cybercultural aspects within contemporary journalism experiences, mainly from the emergence of the Semantic Web and the technical functionalities that result from it, such as the use of algorithms and applications. We explain the basic concepts of this technical set and it’s correlation to the Communication and Journalism fields particularly. The possibilities of approximation of this scene within journalistic activity are presented due to examples which are already in application with international journalistic markers. We come up with a configuration of the curation role for the professional that will act within this new cybercultural context.


  • The mediatization of journalism - AR74*

    Proposing an explanation of current macro-sociological changes and institutional transformations in journalism, this article argues that journalism is currently undergoing a process of mediatization. Drawing upon the international research literature as well as statements from interviews with news workers working on Danish news websites, the article examines four current trends in journalism that are closely connected to the rise of news on the web, namely the use of the affordances of news websites, radical commercialization, increased audience participation in news production, and the increased multi-skilling and simultaneous de-skilling of journalists. Taken together, these trends reflect a process through which journalism increasingly subsumes itself to the logic of the media, suggesting mediatization as an adequate explanatory framework. One implication of such a process is that journalism seems to be transforming from an occupational profession into an organizational one
